Ethics of Reiki

Before we get started on your journey, we feel it is important to first discuss the ethics of Reiki. All students must agree to abide by these ethics as Reiki practitioners and Reiki Master/Teacher. As a Reiki Practitioner / Reiki Master Practitioner and Teacher (RMT) you agree to:

1. Abide by a vow of confidentiality. Any information that is discussed within the context of a Reiki session is confidential between the client and practitioner.
2. Provide a safe and comfortable area for sessions or classes and work to provide an empowering and supportive environment for clients and students.
3. Always treat clients and students with the utmost respect and honor.
4. Have a pure and clear intention to offer your services for the highest healing good of the client and highest potential of the student.
5. Provide a brief oral or written description of what happens during a session and what to expect before a client’s initial session. Provide a clear written description of subjects to be taught during each level of Reiki prior to class and list what the student will be able to do after taking the class.
6. Be respectful of all others’ Reiki views and paths.
7. Educate clients/students on the value of Reiki and explain that sessions do not guarantee a cure, nor are they a substitute for qualified medical or professional care. Reiki is one part of an integrative healing or wellness program.
8. Suggest a consultation or referral for clients to qualified licensed professionals (medical doctor, licensed therapist, etc.) when appropriate.
9. Never diagnose or prescribe. Never suggest that the client/student change prescribed treatment or interfere with the treatment of a licensed health care provider.
10. Be sensitive to the boundary needs of individual clients and students.
11. Never ask clients to disrobe (unless in the context of a licensed massage therapy session at the client’s option). Do not touch the genital area or breasts. Practice hands-off healing of these areas if treatment is needed.
12. Be working to create harmony and friendly cooperation between Reiki Practitioners/ Master Teachers in the community and represent the COR in a most professional manner.
13. Act as a beacon in your community by doing the best job possible.
14. Work to empower your students to heal themselves and to encourage and assist them in the development of their work with Reiki or their Reiki practices.
15. Be actively working on your own healing so as to embody and fully express the essence of Reiki in everything that you do.
It is very important that you as a Reiki practitioner do your research to gain more information as to what is legally required of you to practice Reiki within your state/country. All states within the U.S.A. may have different requirements as far as licenses etc. The same applies if you live outside of the U.S.A. All countries may have their own requirements and it is imperative that you check to see if there are any special licenses required.

Sickness and Health Laws

During treatment, remember that we do not give lifestyle advice or diagnosis unless we have additional therapeutic training! Instead, we respect others' choices in life, without judging or blaming someone (not even ourselves). Treat each customer with love, respect and consideration. Observe confidentiality and remember that the customer does not have confidentiality to you. Invite the client to seek medical advice if this is in obvious need of it. Never invite the customer to cancel the on-going medical care and medication.

Reiki treatments go under quackery law. It announces that we must not treat diseases under the Communicable Diseases Act is notifiable diseases. Nor must we treat cancer and other malignant tumours’, diabetes, epilepsy or other pathological conditions associated with pregnancy or childbirth

Part of Act
Professional health and medical care, "QUACKERY LAW” by Swedish Standard

Legal Aspects of Reiki

In this section it is not my intent to go into the legal aspects surrounding Reiki. The reason for this is simple. Laws vary from state to state, from country to country. It is up to you as a Reiki practitioner to check on the requirements needed to practice within your state or country. What this section is for is to give you a few guidelines that were given to me as I went through my training.
Soon you will be a Reiki practitioner and not long after that a Reiki Master. It is important that you are made aware of few legal aspects when working with other individuals, whether it is a student or a client. First let’s look at the things you CAN not legally say.
You Can Not:
         Heal (Ministers can Heal)
         Cure
         Diagnose
         Prescribe
All of the above can only be done by a licensed medical doctor. You may very well get in trouble for practicing medicine without a license if you use any of these words. Protect yourself and your clients/students.
You can however use the words:
         Practitioner
         Therapists
         Treatment or Remission
There is another reason why we cannot use the above aforementioned words, and that reason is simple, WE do not do the healing. Reiki (Universal Life Force) does the healing. We are simply a channel, the conduit through which it flows.
